What started out as a mere rut has turned into a fully-fledged crisis for Real Madrid this season, which culminated in the sacking of Xabi Alonso.

But just when Real Madrid believed they would start afresh after the sacking of Xabi Alonso, the club hit a new low, losing 3-2 to Albacete in the Copa del Rey Round of 16.

In the space of mere days, Real Madrid have now lost the Super Cup title to arch-rivals Barcelona, replaced their coach and are now out of the Copa del Rey.

Real Madrid to take ‘major decision’

In light of the recent exit to Albacete, the Real Madrid board believes the club have finally hit rock bottom, reports COPE.

With Alonso no longer a scapegoat, Real Madrid have already informed that full blame will be given to players if they continue to underperform.

In fact, the report suggests that the frustrated Real Madrid board, led by Florentino Perez, could make drastic moves at the end of the season.

Real Madrid are indeed holding the players at blame for the defeat to Albacete and are now poised to make some ‘major surprising decisions’, one of which could include the potential sale of key underperformers.

Some of the top underperformers in the recent past have been Vinicius Jr., who hasn’t been the same since being snubbed at the 2024 Ballon d’Or award.

Vinicius has barely scored goals for Los Blancos, although that hasn’t prevented him from demanding the same salary as Kylian Mbappe.

The Brazilian, therefore, could be one of the major scapegoats for Real Madrid in the summer, especially if he keeps up his lofty demands and fails to sign a contract extension.

But Vinicius won’t be the only target. The feeling within the club is that almost all of their players, barring Kylian Mbappe and Thibaut Courtois, have majorly underperformed this season.

As such, Real Madrid plan to make it clear to Arbeloa and the team that they need to put in extra effort during the second half of the season, as the situation could get drastic.

A senior figure from the club will be in charge of this makeover at Real Madrid and these changes could take place before even the Levante clash.
