Tonight’s game against Deportivo Alaves is shaping up to be far more than just a regular La Liga fixture. For manager Xabi Alonso, it is a litmus test.

Facing immense pressure after a string of disappointing results, including just two wins in the last eight games, the Basque tactician is reportedly facing an ultimatum.

The atmosphere at Valdebebas has been tense, but ahead of this crucial clash in Vitoria, Real Madrid captain Dani Carvajal has stepped up to shield his manager.

“It is not Xabi’s fault”

According to a report from Defensa Central, Carvajal, who is currently sidelined following knee surgery, gathered the dressing room for a very serious conversation to rally the troops.

Despite his physical absence from the pitch, his leadership remains the glue holding the squad together.

Carvajal’s message to his teammates was blunt and self-critical. “If we don’t win in Elche, Girona, Vallecas, against Celta or now in Vitoria, it is not Xabi’s fault; we are the responsible ones,” Carvajal said.

The speech seems to have had the desired effect as well. The report suggests that while there were doubts about Alonso’s methods a few weeks ago, the players and coaching staff have since bridged the gap.

The squad has assumed responsibility for the recent slump and is determined to turn the situation around, starting at the Mendizorroza.

With Alonso’s job potentially on the line, reports indicate the board wants three consecutive victories to close out the year. The players know they must fight not just for points but for their manager’s survival.
