Real Madrid captain hits out after being criticised for applauding Celta Vigo icon – ‘Values above all’ | OneFootball

Real Madrid stole all three points against Celta Vigo at the death in their recent La Liga clash, counting on a 94th-minute winner to take home the win.

For a long time after the Galicians’ equaliser, it looked set that Los Blancos would drop points once more and suffer another blow in their pursuit of the league title.

One incident that did not go down well with the fans in that situation was Real Madrid captain Dani Carvajal applauding Iago Aspas’ entry to the field as a substitute, and some fans were left annoyed at the development.

A great player, a better person

The said incident took place in the 83rd minute of the game when Real Madrid were still on level terms with Celta and the hosts’ manager opted to bring on the captain Iago Aspas for a late cameo.

Alongside the stadium, even Carvajal applauded the Spanish legend’s entry on the field, much to the dismay of fans who saw it as a sign of disrespect to the team who were losing.

The captain, however, is not one to stay silent and has come out on his social media to explain why he did what he did and that it was, in no way, any sign of disrespect.

“That gesture means respect , respect for a legend of our league. Values are above all, a quality that I see you lack,” he wrote online via MARCA, holding his ground.

The player, needless to say, was completely right with his decision and actions on the night and does not deserve any slack for being a good comrade and sportsperson on the field.

If anything, the outburst highlights the insecurity in the Real Madrid fanbase given the team’s recent struggles.

Eventually, Real Madrid took three points anyhow, leading to the incident being largely forgotten.

Carvajal, for his part, is still working his way back into the team after injury and will hope for more prominence in the tough games coming up.
