Dani Carvajal offered a very candid pitchside interview after Real Madrid’s heavy 5-2 defeat at the hands of cross-town rivals Atletico Madrid.
The veteran Real Madrid defender was at a loss of words when asked about the performance against Atletico Madrid, who completely outclassed Los Blancos.
Carvajal also talked about how Nico Gonzalez, the Atleti winger, should have been penalised for his fouls.
“We’re screwed, few words are going to console us.” This was Carvajal’s first reaction after the defeat to Atletico Madrid.
Few can blame the veteran given the way Real Madrid lost the game, especially after coming on the back of a seven-game winning run this season. It was a frustrating outing for the Whites, which was made worse by Eder Militao’s injury.
When asked about losing three points, the right-back said the defeat to Aleti will remind the team to wake up and accept that things are not all too well.
“Football isn’t all math, it’s not all rosy. You have to take the reading from this: sometimes a blow has to be turned into something positive.
“Praise weakens, and today we’re hit with the reality that the team is rebuilding and still has a lot to improve. Atletico was much better, and we have to listen and work harder,” he said.

“You can’t think you’re going to win everything. There are very good opponents in this league, and if you’re not at 100% and competing on all fronts, you might lose.”
Real Madrid’s defeat on the night will hand Barcelona an excellent opportunity to overtake Los Blancos in the league table, provided the Catalans can secure a win against Real Sociedad on Sunday.
Nevertheless, Carvajal went on to point out Nico Gonzalez’s fouls on the night, which could have been penalised.
“I haven’t seen the footage, but the marks from his boots are clear on my foot,” he said.
Carvajal also talked about Alexander Sorloth not being given a second yellow card despite celebrating with the fans.
“Yes, we asked about it. They explained to us that you can’t celebrate with the stands because of possible crowd surges, and he said there was no dangerous situation, that’s how he explained it to me. Let’s see if they explain it to us like that before the competition starts,” he said.
On whether the team lacked intensity compared to their opponents, the Real Madrid captain acknowledged:
“I don’t know if it was about intensity, but I agree. The coach asked us to step up a gear at halftime. Atlético believed more in those plays, and it was a key point in the match.”
Following the defeat, one would expect Carvajal to play a crucial role in rallying the team up in the dressing room and make sure the team doesn’t lose their touch ahead of an action-packed October.
“Tomorrow the sun will rise, we work hard again. Let this defeat hurt us, we must feel the pain and carry it within us to bring out the courage,” he concluded.
