Real Madrid defensive mainstay to sign one-year contract with a pay cut | OneFootball

Real Madrid are close to resolving one of the important contract situations inside the squad ahead of next season. 

Although the club is already planning several changes in defence, one experienced figure now looks increasingly likely to stay at the Santiago Bernabeu.

According to Mundo Deportivo, Antonio Rudiger is set to renew his contract with Real Madrid for one more season unless there is a dramatic late twist. 

The German defender remains highly valued within the squad, especially because of his experience, leadership and performances during the most demanding period of the campaign.

The club believe Rudiger has shown enough quality in recent months to continue competing at the highest level despite approaching the later stages of his career.

With David Alaba officially heading towards the exit door, Real Madrid needed clarity regarding the future of their defensive line. 

In that context, the club see Rudiger as the ideal senior figure to guide the backline next season, especially during a period of transition.

The current plan is for the German international to extend his stay until the summer of 2027. 

One important detail in the negotiations involves his wages.

Since Rudiger is currently among the highest earners in the squad, receiving around €14 million gross per season, the new agreement is expected to include a reduced salary as part of the extension.

The 2025/26 season has been physically demanding for the defender, as his campaign was disrupted early after surgery last summer kept him sidelined until November. 

More fitness setbacks followed at the start of the year, raising doubts about his long-term future at the club. However, everything changed during the second half of the season.

Since February, Rudiger has become one of the most reliable players in the squad. 

In La Liga, he missed only four matches after returning to full fitness, while in the Champions League he played every minute from the knockout clash against Benfica until Madrid’s elimination in Munich.
