Real Madrid will hold a contested presidential election, a process that is blocking José Mourinho’s much-anticipated move and leaving Benfica waiting. According to Glorioso 1904, the vote has direct implications for Benfica and their head coach.
The club’s electoral board unanimously approved the candidacy of Enrique Riquelme, a 37-year-old businessman, to challenge incumbent Florentino Pérez. It is the first time in 20 years that members will choose between two candidates.
Since 2006, each election had featured only one candidate. After two years of heavy criticism, Pérez called early elections.
With Pérez and Riquelme in the race, the club could have a new president in the coming weeks. The election is to be scheduled within 15 days, with 6 June indicated.
Uncertainty persists at Benfica over Mourinho’s continuity as head coach. The deadline for the Special One’s contract termination ends on Tuesday, 26 May, leaving the coaching situation unclear.
