Real Madrid’s desire to hire a new top-quality centre-back is well known as the club are looking for a long-term partner to join forces with Dean Huijsen who has quickly become a very important player in the team’s backline.

Liverpool’s Ibrahima Konate, on that front, has become a top option especially with his contract at Anfield ending next season and Real Madrid pushing for him to join as a free agent.

As relayed by BILD (h/t The Madrid Zone) in a recent report, however, Los Blancos have identified another potential target to reinforce the department and the player in question is one of Germany’s biggest young defenders.

Bayern Munich’s gem

Indeed, the player Real Madrid now have their sights on is none other than Bayern Munich’s young star Dayot Upamecano.

The 26-year-old star joined the Bavarian side in July 2021 and has gone on to establish himself as a trusted member of the team’s defence.

His contract with the German side, however, runs out in June 2026 and that aspect of his situation interests the club.

Los Blancos’ plan is to sign Upamecano as a free agent should the conditions work out.

This falls in line with their recent idea of signing top players on free transfers as they did with Trent Alexander-Arnold, Antonio Rudiger, Kylian Mbappe and David Alaba.

It remains to be seen what Bayern Munich do to resist the Spanish giants’ approach, for it is not the first time the club have threatened to swoop a star player away on a free.

David Alaba made a similar move to Real Madrid in recent years and Alphonso Davies was very close to following suit, although the Germans eventually got the player to agree on a renewal. With a third player now threatened, they will be prepared to counter.

Last season, Upamecano made 20 league appearances for the club and oversaw seven clean sheets in the process.

He even made 11 UEFA Champions League appearances with over 11 defensive actions per game.
