Real Madrid striker Kylian Mbappe has been accused of not caring for Los Blancos fans in the Spanish media, as an online petition to get him out of Estadio Bernabeu breaks the Guinness World Record.

Mbappe has scored 41 goals and given six assists in 41 appearances for Madrid this season, but that will not be enough for Los Blancos to end the campaign with a major trophy.

Real Madrid went out to Bayern Munich in the quarter-finals of the Champions League, and it is only a matter of time before Barcelona win LaLiga.

Barcelona will become the champions of Spain for the second season in a row if they draw with Madrid at Spotify Camp Nou on Sunday.

According to AS, Mbappe could be part of the Madrid squad against Barcelona but is unlikely to start.

The France international striker has been suffering with a hamstring injury he picked up against Real Betis on April 24.

During his rehabilitation, Mbappe went to Italy with his partner on a break, which did not go down well with some Madrid fans.

Some Madrid supporters have also pointed out that since Mbappe joined in the summer of 2024 as a free agent after leaving Paris Saint-Germain, Los Blancos have failed to win La Liga or the Champions League.

An online petition calling for ‘Mbappe out’ was recently launched with the aim of collecting 200,000 signatures.

Almost 32million people have signed it, shattering the Guinness World Record in the process, although we must note that not all of them will be Madrid fans.

The Spanish media has also been hammering Mbappe for his perceived lack of interest and for not being with the team during their tough times and going on a break.

Two Cadena SER journalists have even suggested that Mbappe could be saving himself for France for the 2026 World Cup finals this summer.

Real Madrid striker Kylian Mbppe criticised in Spanish media

Spanish journalist Antonio Romero said on Cadena SER’s El Larguero program: “I think Mbappe has been managing his physical condition for some time to arrive at the final stage of the World Cup in top form.

“We must also remember that he had bad luck in the final stage of the European Championship; he broke his nose and received criticism in his country because he couldn’t be the leader people expected.

“So, I think he doesn’t want that to happen again. In the end, muscle strain is an injury that depends on the player.”

Romero added: “I can’t wrap my head around the idea of a player like Kylian Mbappe missing a Clásico at such a crucial stage of the season, especially if, for example, the league title was on the line.

“Because muscle strain isn’t an injury that should make you miss an important match.”

Fellow journalist Julio Pulido said: “Now his image is also somewhat at stake.

“I know the World Cup is definitely on the line, but if he’s left out of Sunday’s match, we’ll have to worry about how that looks to the fans.”

Romero noted: “I think he has shown that his image, in terms of what the Real Madrid fans might think, matters very little to him.”

Pulido responded: “Yes, but I’m referring to the image Real Madrid fans have of Mbappe’s final commitment to the team and this whole episode, which I think has significantly damaged his image.

“If he’s out of the game and doesn’t recover from that strain, the backlash will only get worse.”

Mbappe, though, has defended himself against criticism for going to Italy.

The striker’s representatives issued a statement on Tuesday, which read, as published in The Guardian: “Part of the criticism is based on an over-interpretation of elements related to a recovery period strictly supervised by the club, without reflecting the reality of Kylian’s commitment and the work he puts in every day for the team.”
