Real Madrid are in discussions with the representatives of José Mourinho over a potential return to the Santiago Bernabéu.
The Athletic has reported that club president Florentino Perez has identified the Benfica boss as his preferred candidate to replace Álvaro Arbeloa this summer.
Arbeloa is widely expected to leave at the end of the current campaign, with the club on course to finish without a trophy for the second season running.

Real currently sit 11 points behind Barcelona in LaLiga and were eliminated by Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarter-finals.
While no negotiations are said to have taken place between Real Madrid and Benfica, any agreement to bring Mourinho to the Spanish capital would require a release fee in the region of €3m, as the Portuguese coach is under contract until 2027.
Between 2010-2013, Mourinho lead Real Madrid to one LaLiga title, one Copa del Rey title, and a Supercopa de España triumph.
