Dani Carvajal’s future at Real Madrid remains one of the most delicate subjects at the club this summer, with his long-term role at the club increasingly uncertain.
Now, a former Real Madrid great has stepped forward to make a case for the defender to be treated with the respect his career deserves.
Speaking at The Forum event held at the Metropolitano stadium, Luis Figo was measured but firm in his support for the 33-year-old.
“In Carvajal’s case, he’s had a serious injury; I don’t know what his physical condition is. I’m very grateful to people who give their whole lives for a club, regardless of whether they’re useful,” he said (h/t Mundo Deportivo).
“When you have to leave, it’s just as easy to do well as it is to do badly,” Figo added.
Figo went further, drawing on his own personal experience to make the point that players of Carvajal’s standing deserve to be handled with greater care and sensitivity.

“Carvajal deserves all the respect. I don’t know if he should be getting more playing time or not; that’s a matter for the coach. A player with a certain level of experience should be treated differently in terms of communication.
“I went through that during my last spell at Inter, when they treated me like a child, and you’re old enough to understand everything. Often, things are done wrong for no reason,” he added.
Having been a part of Real Madrid for almost the entirety of his career, Carvajal is indeed a club legend, with almost 450 competitive appearances for the team.
During his time at the Bernabeu, the defender won six Champions League titles and four Spanish league titles, making him one of the most successful right-backs in the history of football.
But with his contract expiring at the end of the season and speculation over a potential move to Qatar, it will be interesting to see what the future has in store for the Spaniard.
