Real Madrid’s efforts to recruit one of Spain’s most promising young midfielders appear to have ended in disappointment, with Girona talent Enzo Perez now expected to continue his development at Barcelona.

According to SPORT, the Catalan club have moved into pole position to secure the signature of the highly-rated 14-year-old, despite significant interest from Real Madrid, Manchester City, Atletico Madrid and several other clubs across Spain.

Perez has become one of the most talked-about young prospects in youth football following his impressive performances for Girona’s academy sides. 

His maturity in midfield, technical quality and potential have attracted widespread attention, turning him into one of the most sought-after players in his age group.

However, despite strong competition, the youngster appears to have already chosen the path he wants to follow.

Choosing Real Madrid over Barcelona

As reported by the outlet, Real Madrid worked hard in an attempt to convince Perez to join their academy setup.

In fact, the Spanish giants viewed him as a player with enormous long-term potential and hoped to bring him into their youth structure before his value and reputation continued to grow.

Furthermore, Manchester City also had an ambitious plan for the midfielder. 

Rather than immediately integrating him into their system, the Premier League club preferred the idea of Perez continuing his development at Girona before potentially making the move to England later in his career.

Despite these proposals, Perez’s priority remained unchanged. The midfielder was most interested in either staying at Girona or returning to Barcelona, where he previously spent part of his youth development.

Why Barcelona over Real Madrid?

The decision to choose the Blaugrana over Real Madrid appears to be based on sentimental factors. 

Simply put, Perez maintains a strong connection with Barcelona from his previous spell at the club, and the possibility of returning to an environment he already knows proved highly attractive.

Another significant factor is family, as once the move is concluded, Perez will reunite with his brother Luca at Barcelona.

While Girona made serious efforts to retain one of the brightest talents in their academy, and Real Madrid continued to press for a breakthrough, Barcelona’s project ultimately appears to have won the race.
