Real Madrid are set to continue their defensive revolution this summer, with their intention to be able to field almost an entirely new backline in the Club World Cup this summer. The next position on the agenda is the left-back spot, which has been an area of doubt this season due to the injuries of Ferland Mendy and concern over Fran Garcia.

The left-back position was being reserved for Bayern Munich’s Alphonso Davies, but after he renewed his contract in Germany, Los Blancos have been forced to reconsider. Originally it was not thought to be a priority, but they have decided to move for a left-back after securing deals for Dean Huijsen and Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Alvaro Carreras is the first choice for Real Madrid

Benfica left-back Alvaro Carreras is in pole position for the job. According to Marca, they will pursue the 22-year-old, who perfectly fits Xabi Alonso’s plans to play with three central defenders. His attacking prowess, technique and pace have been highlighted as key attributes that make him stand out, impressing against both Atletico Madrid and Barcelona in the Champions League this season. Los Colchoneros are thought to have considered a move for him themselves.

Carreras has a €50m release clause at Benfica

Manchester United, from where he moved, have an €18m buyback clause on Carreras, who made his move permanent last summer for €6m. It had been thought the Red Devils could buy him back and sell at a profit, but Real Madrid have ruled out collaborating with Manchester United. Carreras has a €50m release clause, which Los Blancos will try to negotiate down.

Milos Kerkez and Theo Hernandez amongst alternatives

Huijsen’s Bournemouth teammate Milos Kerkez is thought of as a potential back-up option to Carreras by Los Blancos, although Kerkez too has a €50m asking price, and plenty of interest in the Premier League. AC Milan star Theo Hernandez, who came through at Valdebebas, has also offered himself to Los Blancos, but is not believed to be in Real Madrid’s thinking. Real Madrid have also been linked with more economic left-back options in recent weeks too, but it seems they are set to spend big again.
