Real Madrid’s La Liga title hopes may be slipping away, but there is still plenty on the line for individuals, none more so than Kylian Mbappe. 

The French forward remains at the centre of the Pichichi race, but what once looked like a comfortable lead has suddenly turned into a tense and unpredictable battle.

With seven games left to play, Mbappe sits at the top of the scoring charts with 23 goals. However, the margin for error has narrowed significantly.

Pressure builds as rivals close the gap

The biggest threat to Mbappe’s hopes of retaining the Pichichi comes from Vedat Muriqi, who has surged into contention with 21 goals for Mallorca. 

The two-goal gap means the race is now wide open, especially considering the contrasting momentum between the two forwards.

Muriqi’s consistency in recent weeks has added real pressure, particularly as Mallorca continue to fight for crucial points in their own campaign. 

Meanwhile, further behind, Ante Budimir of Osasuna (16 goals) and Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal (15 goals) remain in the conversation, though they would require a remarkable run to close the gap.

A rare opportunity for Real Madrid

Yet in recent decades, the award has not been as frequent for Los Blancos as their overall dominance might suggest.

Legends such as Hugo Sanchez, Raul Gonzalez, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Karim Benzema have carried that legacy, with Mbappe now aiming to add another chapter.

Goal drought raises concerns

Despite leading the chart, Mbappe’s recent form has become a growing concern, as the forward has not scored in La Liga since early February, when Real Madrid secured a narrow victory over Valencia.

Over the last eight league matches, he has failed to find the net, a run partly influenced by injury setbacks that saw him miss four games. 

In contrast, Muriqi has capitalised on this period, scoring six goals and dramatically tightening the race.

With the season entering its decisive phase, Mbappe’s ability to rediscover his scoring rhythm will be crucial. 

The margin is slim, the pressure is rising, and every goal from this point forward could prove decisive.

Lastly, if he wins the Pichichi this year, he would become only the third Real Madrid player to win this honour in consecutive seasons after Hugo Sanchez and Cristano Ronaldo.
