Real Madrid were one of the busiest teams during the summer transfer window, bringing in not one but four new players.
There was a particular focus in restructuring the defence, with coach Xabi Alonso playing a key role in bringing in the likes of Trent, Dean Huijsen and Alvaro Carreras.
The Spaniard was equally keen on getting rid of old, unwanted players in the team, including David Alaba. Real Madrid, in fact, had made great efforts to offload the veteran Austrian star this past summer.
According to Defensa Central, the Spanish giants were willing to pay Alaba as much as €6 million in order to get rid of him this summer – half of his annual wages.
The former Bayern Munich star’s contract at the Santiago Bernabeu expires at the end of the season. But Real Madrid were ready to terminate his contract this summer by offering him the payout of half his salary.

This is largely because the club were aware that the veteran defender was not a part of Xabi Alonso’s plans and will largely serve the role of a benchwarmer this season.
Alaba, after all, has struggled with fitness for the majority of his career at Real Madrid, with no real hopes of becoming a prominent player under Alonso, his former teammate at Bayern.
Real Madrid, therefore, were giving him an excellent opportunity to secure an exit and perhaps join a foreign league, where he could have hoped to earn even more.
Alaba, though, declined the offer and opted to continue at the club until the end of the season. It appears the veteran defender wants to fight for his place in the first team this season.
That is unlikely to change things, though, as Alonso already considers Huijsen a first-team regular, while the Real Madrid coach is also eyeing a move for Ibrahima Konate next summer.
Real Madrid are likely to bring in Konate at the expense of veteran stars such as Alaba and Antonio Rudiger, whose contracts won’t be renewed.
