Real Madrid are expected to seek a new head coach at season’s end. Alvaro Arbeloa, who replaced Xabi Alonso, has impressed the squad but is unlikely to be renewed after missing out on the Champions League and Copa del Rey, with La Liga also slipping away.
The club have begun assessing alternatives, with Jurgen Klopp, Mauricio Pochettino and Didier Deschamps all linked. There is a chance each declines. Marca states Florentino Perez is increasingly open to a Jose Mourinho return for a second spell.
Mourinho can leave Benfica for free this summer and has yet to commit to staying. A Bernabeu comeback could appeal, with the board still rating him highly and a sense of unfinished business in Madrid.
There has been no contact between Real Madrid and Mourinho, or with the 63-year-old’s representatives. That could change as the summer nears, but any move is unlikely until a final decision is taken on Arbeloa’s future.
Mourinho could galvanise a dressing room in need of a spark after back-to-back underwhelming seasons. A return would make sense on that front, although whether it happens remains unclear.
