Despite having already finalised four new signings before the summer transfer window has even opened, Real Madrid are not resting on their laurels. Moves are already being made towards further additions, and in the driving seat is head coach Jose Mourinho.

Whenever Mourinho has identified a top target, Real Madrid have moved quickly to seal their signing. That was especially the case when it took less than 48 hours to agree a deal for Marc Cucurella, who may not be the only Chelsea player to move to the Bernabeu this summer.

In the last couple of weeks, new links have formed between Real Madrid and Enzo Fernandez. Mourinho is a big fan of the Argentine midfielder, and according to Marca, he is the Portuguese’s number one target to strengthen his options in the middle of the park.

Fernandez: I would like to live in Madrid

Real Madrid are prepared to make a move for Fernandez, and they are boosted by the fact that the player himself would almost certainly welcome the move with open arms. Earlier this year, he admitted that he’d be delighted to move to Madrid.

“I would like to live in Spain. I like Madrid a lot, it reminds me of Buenos Aires. I would live in Madrid. The player lives wherever he wants. With English I defend myself, but with Spanish I would be better.”

Chelsea open to Fernandez sale

Chelsea, now managed by former Real Madrid head coach Xabi Alonso, are said to be open to hearing offers for Fernandez. Their failure to qualify for any European competition means that sales will be sought this summer, and this further increases the chances that the Argentina international ends up at the Bernabeu.

However, it won’t be straightforward, especially if Chelsea continue to ask for well in excess of €100m. If that remains the case, a move could instead be sought for West Ham United’s Mateus Fernandes, who is Mourinho’s next option.
