The aftermath of the Spanish Super Cup defeat in Jeddah has sparked intense discussions at Real Madrid about addressing their right-back situation.
The issue is not Lucas Vázquez’s performance but the glaring lack of depth in the position. While there is confidence in academy prospects like Lorenzo Aguado and Jesus Fortea, they are not seen as immediate solutions.
This has led to heightened debate over entering the winter transfer market, with a clear consensus emerging: a right-back is a higher priority than a centre-back.
The ideal scenario remains signing Trent Alexander-Arnold, but the financial constraints make that a remote possibility.
As a result, the idea of signing a short-term “patch” for six months has gained momentum, reports AS, with several candidates under consideration.
Real Madrid’s primary focus remains on Alexander-Arnold but the chances of a deal remain slim, with Liverpool resolute in retaining their star right-back.
However, the previously rigid stance of “Trent or nothing” has softened. The coaching staff views a winter signing as “necessary,” and the management is warming to the idea of a temporary solution.
Real Madrid like Pedro Porro, Jeremie Frimpong, and Denzel Dumfries but all come with significantly high price tags, ruling them out as options for January.
Former academy man Alex Jimenez, who joined AC Milan permanently for €5 million in the summer last year, is seen as a cost-effective option, although negotiations will needed with the Italian outfit.

Chelsea captain Reece James is another player under consideration, with Los Blancos being long-term admirers. However, his injury issues are a concern and assurances about his fitness will be sought.
Juanlu Sanchez of Sevilla is another player on the agenda, with Real Madrid seeing him as an affordable and promising alternative. Meanwhile, Rayo Vallecano’s Andrei Ratiu has also popped up as an option of late.
Benjamin Pavard is another player that Real Madrid admire due to his ability to play at right-back and centre-back, although his market value is high.
Finally, Serge Aurier, currently unattached with any club, is seen as a low-cost option, although there are doubts about his fitness.
The winter transfer window closes on February 2, leaving Real Madrid with limited time to make a decision. While no moves have been finalized, the club appears more open to finding a stopgap solution.
