Enzo Fernández’s comments to the media during the recent international break triggered massive reports on a possible move to Real Madrid.

After all, the player openly spoke about how he would love to live in Madrid, thereby clearly flirting with the club over a potential transfer.

His comments, however, did not go down well in London and Chelsea have imposed an immediate two-game ban on the player and the manager has announced that the player will not be part of the squad for the games against Port Vale or Manchester City.

Fernandez’s agent speaks

Speaking to The Athletic after the recent development, the player’s agent Javier Pastore was asked how the player is feeling after the sanction to which he responded by explaining how Fernandez was puzzled.

“Enzo didn’t understand the situation. When the coach told him, he accepted it because he’s a highly professional guy, but we don’t understand the punishment because he doesn’t mention any club or say he wants to leave Chelsea, far from it,” he began.

“He only mentions Madrid, the city, because he was asked which European city he’d like to live in one day, and he said Madrid because of the language,” he added.

“But at no point does he say he wants to leave Chelsea or London,” he concluded.

When asked about how the ban happened and when the player and he found out about the same time, he said,

“I received a message from the club on Thursday, while Enzo was travelling back to London; they told me they wanted to speak to me about the comments and sent me the link to Enzo’s words.”

“I replied that it was no problem, that I’d seen the comments too, I’d watched the interview he gave, and at no point did he show a lack of respect towards the club, his teammates, the fans, or anyone else,” he added.

Calling Chelsea’s decision to sanction the player unfair, Pastore said,

“The punishment is completely unfair – banning the player for two matches, which moreover are also absolutely crucial for Chelsea because qualification for the Champions League is at stake and he is one of the team’s most important players.”

Finally, the agent was asked if there had been any talks over a contract renewal with Chelsea to which he provided an honest update of matters.

“There have been talks about renewing his contract, yes. We started discussing it around December or January, but we couldn’t reach an agreement.”

“As Enzo’s contract still has six years to run, we decided not to renew it because the terms weren’t right for us or for the player or for us; given what Enzo is capable of today, he deserves much more than he’s currently earning,” he added.

He then spoke on whether an agreement had been reached and what Fernandez’s stance on a renewal was.

“We haven’t reached an agreement and it may be that this annoyed the club, given that he is a hugely important player, but these are things that have to be managed.”

“Our plan after the World Cup is to meet with Chelsea again and, if there is no agreement, to explore other options,” he added.
