Real Madrid’s search for a new manager is entering a decisive phase, and the situation around Jose Mourinho is becoming more complicated by the day.
According to a report from O Jogo, relayed by Mundo Deportivo, Benfica are not prepared to lose their manager without a fight and are already taking steps to secure his future.
It must be noted that Mourinho has been strongly linked with a return to Real Madrid, especially with the club expected to appoint a new coach ahead of next season.
However, Benfica are pushing back.
As per the outlet, the Portuguese club is planning to offer Mourinho a new contract that would extend his stay beyond his current deal, which runs until 2027.
The proposed extension could take him through to 2028 or even 2029, showing how highly they value his presence.

Notably, Benfica are aware of the growing interest from Madrid and want to act early to protect their position.
So much so that the Primeira Liga club president, Rui Costa, has already held talks with Mourinho this week, focusing on preparations for next season.
That meeting signals clear intent from Benfica to build continuity rather than face uncertainty.
At the same time, it must be noted that there is a release clause that allows Mourinho to leave for around €3 million, but only within a short window – 10 days after the season ends.
If that deadline passes, the clause becomes invalid, and any club interested in hiring him will have to negotiate directly with Benfica, likely for a much higher fee.
This puts Real Madrid in a difficult position. If they truly see Mourinho as their preferred option, they will need to act before that deadline, as delaying the decision could make the deal far more expensive and complicated.
