Real Madrid welcome FIFA U-turn on rights sale and praise UEFA’s stance | OneFootball

Real Madrid have welcomed FIFA’s decision to drop plans to sell a stake in the commercial rights to its competitions, calling it good news for the game and its fans.

The club said in a statement that it valued FIFA’s move and thanked UEFA, confederations and federations, and other institutions that stood firmly against the proposal.

It argued that clubs underpin international football and the World Cup, discovering and developing players for national teams. Such tournaments are of public interest and should not be reduced to financial assets.

The club opposes any attempt to monetise future competition revenues without sharing the associated costs and risks carried by clubs, deeming such initiatives unacceptable and not to be revived.

The club previously refused to join LaLiga’s deal with CVC, which committed a percentage of clubs’ future audiovisual income for 50 years. Pledging long-term revenues that belong to clubs sets a precedent football should avoid, in Spain and internationally.
