Real Madrid do not intend to sign Julian Alvarez, despite his declarations that he intends to leave the club this summer. The Argentina forward shocked Spanish football on Monday night, publicly expressing a desire to leave Atletico Madrid this summer.

Los Blancos also surprised the world a little over two weeks ago with a €150m bid for Alvarez. This was swiftly knocked back by Los Rojiblancos, who pointed to his €500m release clause. The situation has altered though, with Alvarez now publicly in favour of a move.

As explained by Diario AS, Real Madrid were unaware that Alvarez intended to speak to the media on Monday, and had not been informed by his camp. The last they heard from Alvarez’s representatives was several weeks ago, before they made a bid to Atletico, they have little to do with his statements.

Since their bid was turned down, Real Madrid have not come back with a second offer, or spoken to his agent. They have no intention of signing Alvarez any more, and their offer has now expired.

“I think a transfer would be the best thing for everyone, and I want to fulfil my dream,” commented Alvarez, but many have taken that dream to be playing for Barcelona.

Real Madrid approach with Julian Alvarez

It was suggested at the time that the bid for Alvarez was something of an election ploy by President Florentino Perez, who five days earlier announced that he would be making a €150m bid for a ‘top-class’ player, but not who it was. Given Atletico were almost certain to reject it, Perez was able to fulfil his promise without risking said money. The fact that they have not tried to push harder for his signature, and that they are no longer in contact with his representatives, would appear to give credence to the theory, with some suggesting even their offer was not formal.
