Real Madrid’s Dani Carvajal: ‘We’ve hit rock bottom spectacularly’ after Albacete shock | OneFootball

Real Madrid crashed out of the Copa del Rey to Albacete, conceding a last minute winner to Jefte Betancour after twice hauling themselves level from set pieces. Captain Dani Carvajal said the club had hit rock bottom.

“We’ve hit rock bottom spectacularly. We have to face the music even when we lose, and that’s what we have to do now. We, the players, are ultimately responsible. There’s little more I can say.” he told Diario AS.

It was their second damaging defeat in four days. Barcelona took the Spanish Supercup in Saudi Arabia, then Xabi Alonso was dismissed and Alvaro Arbeloa appointed as his replacement. Madrid now turn to La Liga and the Champions League.

“If I knew, we wouldn’t have lost. We were knocked out by a Segunda team. Starting tomorrow, it’s time for self-criticism, we have two fantastic competitions and we’re going to fight for everything.”

“The message is that the team isn’t at its best, we have to work hard and give much more. We apologise to the fans. We aren’t, myself included, living up to the expectations of this club and we’ll give our all in the coming months to turn things around.”

Arbeloa said he was the first one responsible for the Copa del Rey exit, and noted the players’ physical condition as an aggravating factor.
