Real Oviedo became the first side relegated from La Liga after Rayo Vallecano drew 1-1 with Girona on Monday night.

The draw closed matchweek 35. According to L'Équipe, Oviedo now trail Girona, the first team above the drop, by 10 points with three matches left, so they cannot escape.

The Asturian club drop back to the second tier only a year after winning promotion through the play-offs.

Attention now turns to who joins them. Mathematically, every side from seventh to 19th can still go down, with just nine points separating those places.

Oviedo had accepted it was a matter of days, and Monday’s result made it certain.
