Real Sociedad in talks over Aguerd return | OneFootball

Real Sociedad are working to bring back Nayef Aguerd, with talks under way with Marseille over a possible return two summers after his loan from West Ham. The 30-year-old centre-back is among the favoured options to strengthen Matarazzo’s defence.

Aguerd joined Marseille late last August for €23 million and signed through 2030. The club finished fifth in Ligue 1 and, without Champions League football, need to move salaries. According to L’Equipe, Marseille are listening to offers for De Lange, Rulli, Medina, Paixao and Aguerd, with Rulli set for Manchester City.

Marseille have already sold Aubameyang to Deportivo de La Coruña and made their biggest deal with Mason Greenwood’s €39 million switch to Fenerbahce. Al-Sadd of Qatar are also interested in Aguerd, but at 30 he still sees several good years in Europe.

La Real have held talks for some time and now must decide whether to push the deal over the line. Personal terms are not expected to be problematic, though the structure remains to be seen and the fee could rank among the club’s highest for a defender.

Aguerd is currently sidelined and has not featured in pre-season. He underwent surgery for pubalgia after months of discomfort, then, following discussions with medical staff, stayed out of the World Cup and did not play again last season. Before the operation he made 32 appearances across West Ham and Marseille, including 22 for the French side, close to 2,000 minutes. Internationally, he played every minute as Morocco were later declared African champions despite a 1-0 final defeat to Senegal.
