Florentino Perez’s promise of a €150 million transfer has become one of the biggest talking points ahead of Real Madrid’s presidential election, but the club president is keeping the identity of the player under wraps for reasons that go beyond simple campaign strategy.

According to Mundo Deportivo, Perez’s decision to delay the announcement is linked not only to the timing of the election but also to FIFA regulations that govern how clubs can approach players under contract.

The Real Madrid president recently revealed that he is preparing what could become the biggest transfer operation in the club’s history.

However, fans hoping for an immediate announcement will have to wait a little longer.

What are Perez’s motives?

The report explains that Perez intends to reveal the identity of the mystery player next Tuesday, but only if he is re-elected as Real Madrid president.

One obvious reason is the electoral impact, as keeping the player’s identity secret helps maintain excitement and discussion in the final days before club members head to the polls.

However, there is also a legal and procedural aspect behind the decision.

According to the aforementioned outlet, Perez cannot officially move forward with negotiations until the player’s current club has been properly informed.

In that regard, FIFA regulations require clubs to follow a specific process when attempting to sign a footballer who remains under contract elsewhere.

As a result, any formal approach must be made through official channels and by an authorised representative of Real Madrid

Which is why, unlike Enrique Riquelme, Perez has stated that the club will send an offer and has not outright promised the player right away.

This is because making public announcements or initiating negotiations incorrectly could expose the club to complaints and potential disciplinary consequences.

Two agreements are already in place

The situation also helps explain why other agreements mentioned by Perez have been handled differently.

Leading up to the elections, the president openly discussed an agreement involving Denzel Dumfries, while Ibrahima Konate and Jose Mourinho will also sign for Real Madrid if Perez stays in charge.

In those situations, the contractual circumstances are different again, meaning the club does not face the same procedural challenges as it would with a player who remains fully tied to another team.
