Recoba turns 50 – happy birthday, Chino! | OneFootball

There was something special about the way Alvaro Recoba connected with the ball. He struck it powerfully, ferociously, and then it often turned mid-air, as if it had waited until the very last moment to decide where it wanted to finish. It happened many times at San Siro—often enough for it to become a memory. Today, il “Chino” turns 50.

When he arrived in Milan in the summer of 1997, it took only a few minutes to understand what kind of player he was. His league debut came against Brescia: Inter were chasing the game and the match seemed complicated. Recoba came on and lit up the scene with two moments of pure imagination. First a thunderbolt from distance that crashed in off the crossbar, then a free-kick drawn with almost disarming ease. A fairytale debut, in and of itself.

From that day on, the Nerazzurri fans learned to expect the unexpected. That left-footed strike from midfield against Empoli in 1998, the product of creativity rather than calculation. Another decisive signature came in January 2005 against Sampdoria, a shot from the edge of the box that completed a comeback still remembered at San Siro.

Recoba played like that: intuition, courage, and a talent capable of lighting up even the most difficult matches.

Across ten seasons in Inter colours, Alvaro Recoba made 261 appearances and scored 72 goals. Above all, he left behind a trail of technical brilliance and flashes of magic that made fans fall in love. His Nerazzurri journey also brought silverware: two Serie A titles, two Coppa Italia trophies, two Supercoppa Italiana titles and one UEFA Cup.

Today, Alvaro Recoba turns 50. Even now, it only takes closing your eyes to see that left foot strike once more, full of imagination, curling towards the far corner of the net.
