Alex Greenwood’s deep corner caused havoc in the Spain box and, when it eventually squirmed towards Hemp inside the six-yard box, she volleyed home on the turn despite Alexia Putellas’ best efforts to scramble the ball off the line.

Hemp went close to a spectacular second inside 20 minutes when her side footed finish crashed against the post after a sumptuous move from the hosts.

Spain were far from out of the contest, with Olga Carmona and Vicky Lopez both hitting the woodwork inside the opening ten minutes of the second half, while Lucia Kendall and Alessia Russo both went close for the hosts in a thrilling re-run of the Euro 2025 final.

Laura Blindkilde Brown was introduced with 20 to play at Wembley, dropping into the number ten role as England looked to see out the victory.

And despite a few late scares, including an outstanding reaction save from Hannah Hampton to parry Edna Imade’s header away from danger, the Lionesses held on to claim an important qualifying victory.

Rebecca Knaak also helped Germany maintain their 100% start to World Cup qualification with a 5-1 win over Austria.

The defender played the full 90 minutes in Nuremberg as the two-time world champions made it three victories from as many matches in League A Group 4.

Laura Wienroither was an unused substitute for the Austrians, who are still searching for a first point in qualifying after three games.

Germany took a first half lead when Nicole Anyomi fired home inside 17 minutes, with Vivien Endemann adding a second soon after the restart with a smart back-post finish.

An own goal from Sarah Puntigam and Jule Brand strike increased their lead with 15 to play, though Chiara D’Angelo’s reply gave the Austrians faint hope of an unlikely comeback.

That was soon ended though when Lea Schuller added Germany’s fifth and completed the scoring late on.

Elsewhere, Iman Beney grabbed an assist for Switzerland in their 3-1 win over Turkey.

The 19-year-old set up the game’s opening goal, feeding Aurelie Csillag early in the second half to set the Swiss on their way to victory in a battle between League B Group 2’s top two.

Csillag completed her brace with 15 to play to regain the lead for her nation after Turkey’s Ebru Topcu had restored parity within five minutes of the hosts getting their nose in front.

Viola Calligaris then had the final say on proceedings when she extended Switzerland’s lead with ten to play to ensure Beney and co. maintained their 100% record with a third successive win.
