Real Madrid may have won the Madrid derby on Sunday, but they face a spell without Fede Valverde after his late red card at the Bernabeu. The midfielder was judged to have committed serious foul play on Alex Baena, a decision that baffled head coach Alvaro Arbeloa. An appeal may follow.
Diario AS reports that the dismissal was assessed on this week’s Tiempo de Review, with the Referee’s Committee concluding Jose Luis Munuera Montero’s decision was correct and that VAR was right not to intervene. Any appeal would therefore be difficult to win.
The panel said Valverde kicked an opponent when the ball was not within playing distance, using excessive force. After checking multiple angles, they found the contact, nature and intensity consistent with serious foul play, and saw no clear and obvious error to warrant VAR involvement.
Tiempo de Review did not address an early incident between Marcos Llorente and Dani Carvajal that left Atletico Madrid demanding a penalty. Munuera Montero and VAR allowed play to continue, prompting anger from Los Colchoneros.
Atleti had tweeted on Tuesday morning that they were waiting for the clash to be discussed on the programme, so its omission will have disappointed them.
