Referees’ committee says Real Sociedad were favoured from the start at Vallecas

Spain’s referees’ committee has delivered a blunt verdict on Rayo Vallecano v Real Sociedad, highlighting two errors that benefited the visitors. According to Diario Vasco, the CTA used its weekly review to dissect incidents from Sunday at Vallecas.

In minute three, it judged that Turrientes committed a penalty on Carlos Martín from a corner, describing a clear, prolonged hold inside the box with no attempt to play the ball. With Remiro catching the cross and the striker unable to challenge, the on-field call was deemed wrong and VAR should have intervened for a clear, obvious, manifest error.

The assessment amounts to stern criticism of referee José Luis Guzmán Mansilla and VAR official Juan Luis Pulido Santana.

Later, Pedro Díaz’s 2-2 for Rayo was disallowed after a review, the incident reclassified as a penalty to Real that Oyarzabal converted for 1-3, for a supposed foul by Ratiu on Pablo Marín.

The committee’s view was that a Real player nicked the ball first, then the Rayo defender planted his foot and made slight contact with the side of his opponent’s boot. In such situations, the threshold of recklessness is for the referee’s interpretation, so VAR should not have stepped in.

The CTA rarely speaks with such force, and its review was notably critical of both the match official and the VAR.
