Sunderland’s pre-season could hand Régis Le Bris a closer look at leading academy prospects.
According to Sunderland Echo, the friendlies will be used to build fitness, review senior options and possibly reward youngsters from the Academy of Light.
Pathways have opened in previous summers, with several prospects already training with the seniors and others pushing on after strong under-21 campaigns.
Jenson Jones, 19, has signed a new two-year deal. The versatile defender, highly regarded by Le Bris, has Carabao Cup minutes and made Premier League benches, covering full-back roles and midfield.
Goalkeeper Joe Cowan, 16, is well thought of. Depth is strong in that department, yet pre-season often lets young keepers join first-team sessions, travel and gain experience.
Midfielder Jaydon Jones, 19, can operate as a six or an eight and has progressed well. Breaking through is tough given Granit Xhaka, Noah Sadiki, Enzo Le Fée and Habib Diarra, though any involvement would aid his development.
Forward Trey Ogunsuyi, 19, impressed on loan at Falkirk and Shrewsbury Town. His pace and eye for goal could make him useful in friendlies, while another loan remains under consideration.
Finn Geragusian, 18, is tall, powerful and technically sharp, able to play wide or centrally. With a new contract being weighed up, meaningful minutes could help clarify his pathway.
Jack Whittaker, 19, also has a new deal under consideration after impressing for the under-21s. His ability to play wide, as a ten or as an eight offers handy flexibility.
