Granit Xhaka faces at least two weeks out with an ankle injury. According to Sunderland Echo, Régis Le Bris said he will be reassessed then and is almost certain to miss next Monday’s Burnley visit to the Stadium of Light.
Xhaka missed his first league match of the season in the 3-1 defeat at West Ham United, his absence felt most before the break. He could also be a doubt for the fixtures that follow.
Le Bris did not add an extra midfielder in Xhaka’s absence and West Ham scored three before half-time, yet he argued selection was not the main issue. He pointed out the same set-up had worked in the New Year’s Day draw with Manchester City and felt his team underperformed across the pitch.
He accepted West Ham were stronger in duels, more composed and more threatening, and said Sunderland fell below their standards.
Play was briefly halted just before stoppage time after Xhaka appeared to exchange words with a home fan near the away dugout. Le Bris said he did not see the incident and did not want it to distract from the display.
West Ham manager Nuno said he did not know what had happened, adding that the referee told him play had to be paused. He asked how much time would be added and hoped the matter was resolved.
