Sunderland have been handed an injury lift with £17.5m forward Nilson Angulo pictured back in training at the Academy of Light.
According to Sunderland Echo, the 22-year-old sustained a muscle tear in the build-up to the 1-0 defeat to Brighton and Hove Albion on March 14, then missed the Tyne-Wear derby win at Newcastle United. Head coach Régis Le Bris initially said the winger could be out for between four and six weeks.
Fresh images on social media show Angulo stepping up his recovery on the grass, raising hope he could return before the end of the campaign.
Even so, he is unlikely to be available for this weekend’s meeting with Tottenham Hotspur at the Stadium of Light.
Angulo was named in Ecuador’s provisional squad for recent friendlies against Morocco and the Netherlands, but was withdrawn to continue his rehabilitation on Wearside. During the two-week international break, head coach Sebastián Beccacece confirmed he would leave the camp early to focus on recovery.
The forward departed alongside midfielder Patrik Mercado before returning to England, with Beccacece describing both absences as significant losses for his squad.
His return to training represents a timely boost as Sunderland prepare for the final stretch of the Premier League season following his January move to Wearside.
