Regis Le Bris highlights higher standards after Sunderland defeat to Leeds United | OneFootball

Sunderland head coach Regis Le Bris called the pre-season meeting with Leeds United a valuable test and spoke of higher standards after a 1-0 defeat in New Jersey.

"Yeah, it was a good test. I think we felt today that the standards are getting higher because of the opposition, but also because we feel that the energy of the squad is getting better as well," he said, speaking to the Sunderland Echo.

The sides met in the early hours of Friday UK time on their USA tours, a second friendly of the summer for Leeds. Lukas Nmecha scored the only goal, earning Leeds their first win after last weekend's 3-2 loss to Wrexham in Tampa. Sunderland had opened with a 5-1 win over York City before a 4-2 defeat to Liverpool in Nashville.

"So we still have a few details to solve, to fix, and it's probably better to make mistakes now to understand what could be the consequence rather than being exposed later."

"So overall, I appreciated the energy. Our principles, I think, are getting better as well so we are in a good place."
