Régis Le Bris makes two changes to Sunderland’s XI to face Burnley, with Habib Diarra handed his first start since the 2-1 win over Brentford in August.
He is expected to start in midfield as he did after the break at West Ham. Trai Hume appears set to continue in a hybrid role on the right and the back four is unchanged from the London Stadium defeat. According to Sunderland Echo, Diarra replaces Eliezer Mayenda and Chemsdine Talbi returns ahead of Romaine Mundle.
Mundle is on the bench, but there is no Simon Adingra with a possible late loan to AS Monaco nearing. The French club are racing to complete it before the deadline, which could allow Sunderland to pursue Anderlecht winger Nilson Angulo. Both moves depend on Schalke signing Adil Aouchiche permanently to free the international loan slot for Adingra’s exit.
Lutsharel Geertruida is among the substitutes after a weekend when Liverpool made a late attempt to take over his loan from RB Leipzig. With no recall clause in the season-long deal, Sunderland blocked it as they could not secure a replacement in time.
With Leo Hjelde joining Sheffield United on loan earlier on deadline day, youngster Jenson Jones is drafted in as full-back cover. January signing Melker Ellborg is not yet eligible, so Simon Moore backs up Robin Roefs on the bench.
Sunderland XI: Roefs, Mukiele, Ballard, Alderete, Reinildo, Sadiki, Diarra, Le Fee, Hume, Talbi, Brobbey. Subs: Moore, Cirkin, O’Nien, Geertruida, Rigg, Mundle, Mayenda, Isidor, Jenson Jones.
