Rego edges towards new Athletic deal as club have option to 2028 | OneFootball

Athletic are negotiating new terms with Alejandro Rego, whose contract expires on 30 June, while the club hold a unilateral option to extend it by two years to June 2028.

According to as.com, his representatives, Abete and Agirregomezkorta, met sporting director Mikel González at Lezama on Wednesday to refine that pathway and to address other players handled by their agency. Recent performances have strengthened the case for activating the clause.

Rego has recently expressed a strong attachment to Athletic, saying he would like to spend his career with the club and that nowhere feels more like home.

Born in Bilbao in 2003, he came through Santutxu at Mallona before joining Athletic’s Cadete División de Honor in 2017-18. His 1.92m frame, quick combinations and range across the pitch helped him climb to the first team.

Ernesto Valverde has relied on him this season, particularly in the Champions League. The Bilbao midfielder has rotated with Ruiz de Galarreta and Jauregizar, making 21 La Liga appearances with one goal and one assist, plus eight in the Champions League.
