City duo Tijjani Reijnders and Abdukodir Khusanov both featured for 90 minutes as the Netherlands overcame Uzbekistan 2-1 in a pre-World Cup friendly in New York.
The Dutch took on the Central Asian side in a behind-closed-doors clash staged at the Icahn Stadium in Manhattan where a brace of penalties from Cody Gakpo proved the difference.
Reijnders had seen a 13th minute header pass just shy of the target and then fizzed a shot narrowly wide before Gakpo gave the Dutch the lead, the Liverpool man converting a 32nd minute penalty after Crysencio Summerville had been fouled in the box.
The Dutch were then reduced to 10 men late on when Guus Til was shown a red card for handball and deep into stoppage time the Uzbeks forced a leveller thanks to a close range shot from Igor Sergeev.
But in a dramatic late twist, Ronald Koeman’s side – for whom Nathan Ake was an unused substitute - were awarded another spot kick in the 97th minute after a foul on Jan Paul van Hecke with Gakpo again on target to seal victory.
The Netherlands, finalists in 1974, 1978 and 2010, begin their Group F campaign on Sunday, June 14 with a clash against Japan, kick-off 21.00 (UK).
Khusanov and his Uzbek colleagues – who are making their first-ever appearance at the World Cup finals – kick-off their Group K schedule against Colombia on Thursday June 18, kick-off 03.00 (UK).
Meanwhile Rayan Cherki was a second half substitute as France beat Northern Ireland 3-1 at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy in Lille in their final friendly ahead of the World Cup.
In what was head coach Didier Dechamps last match in charge on home soil, a hat-trick from Michael Olise ensured he enjoyed a victorious send-off ahead of the North American and Mexican showpiece
The Bayern Munich man first struck two minutes before half-time to finally wear down Northern Ireland’s stubborn resistance.
And Olise was on target again four minutes after the restart with a superb strike from 18 yards.
Northern Ireland, to their credit, reduced arrears thanks to Patrick Kelly’s 64th minute shot but Olise fired home another stunning effort to seal his first international treble 10 minutes later.
Cherki twice came close to extending the French lead in what proved a highly entertaining clash.
France begin their Group I campaign on Tuesday, June 16 against Senegal, kick-off 20.00 (UK).
