Manchester City are in the midst of an injury crisis. There is no other way to put it. There were eleven players unavailable for Manchester City’s most recent match against Bodø/Glimt. Bernardo Silva was suspended for that match, and Marc Guehi and Antoine Semenyo were ineligible to play in the Champions League. Jokso Gvardiol, John Stones, Ruben Dias, Matheus Nunes, Mateo Kovacic, Nico, Oscar Bobb and Savinho are all injured or suffering from illness. Pep Guardiola provided an update on Savinho, Mateo Kovacic and Nico yesterday. Two of those three players are nearing an return but they won’t play today against Wolves.
Speaking yesterday, Pep Guardiola provided an update on Savinho, Mateo Kovacic and Nico’s bids to come back from injury. Speaking on Mateo Kovacic, and why he had Achilles surgery, Pep Guardiola said: “Kova, I spoke with him after Fulham when we qualified for the Champions League, I said don’t go to the [Club] World Cup and stay and make surgery quick.”
” (Kovacic) Played two or three games and again his bone didn’t react well so he had surgery.“
Pep Guardiola also revealed that Nico could play in Manchester City’s pivotal Champions League fixture against Galatasaray next week. With Rodri suspended for that match after being sent off against Bodø/Glimt, Nico’s availablity for the match against Galatasaray could be vital. Speaking on Nico’s fitness, Pep Guardiola said: “Nico, I hope he can help us for the absence of Rodri for Galatasaray but he is a doubt.”

Lastly, Pep Guardiola provided an update on Savinho’s progress. He explained that Savinho has begun running again after the injury he suffered against Sunderland. Speaking on Savinho’s progress, Guardiola told the media: “Savinho still stuck. Yesterday he ran on the pitch so maybe two weeks or three weeks, or maybe less I don’t know.”
Pep Guardiola also made a point yesterday of saying that he wants and needs his injured players back. Tellingly, he said: “Only I ask for two seasons, give me the team please, being fit. No more than that. And we don’t have it.”
The sooner Manchester City have almost a full squad available, the better it will be for Pep Guardiola. That sounds like a simplistic statement to make, but it’s the reality of the situation. City are dealing with an injury crisis, but there does look to be light at the end of that particular tunnel. Savinho has begun working on his return. Nico seems to be closing in on a return. That is good news for Pep Guardiola’s side.

Mateo Kovacic remains some way off from returning, but the good news is that Nico and Savinho are edging their way back to full fitness.
