Real Sociedad closed a historic season for winning the Copa del Rey with a flat draw against Espanyol, yet their league campaign was mediocre. According to Diario Vasco, an eight-match winless run left them four points above relegation and five off Europe, though the cup had already secured continental football.
The high came on 18 April in Seville, beating Atlético Madrid on penalties, so the year effectively ended happily at La Cartuja. Across 46 games they recorded 17 wins, 15 draws and 14 defeats, scoring 75 and conceding 68. In La Liga they were the fifth-highest scorers but ended joint-most porous with Levante on 61 against, with only three clean sheets in 38.
The squad was stretched and youth-driven, with 35 players used and 24 from Sanse. Eight academy products sat among the 13 most-used footballers in league and cup. Next season could run to 48 to 63 fixtures with the Europa League and the Supercopa de España.
Beñat Turrientes forced his way past Brais into the season’s notional XI in the finale. Six of that XI came through Sanse. Marín finished 13th for minutes, above Brais, who was completely out of favour under Matarazzo.
Sergio Gómez led appearances with 43, Aramburu had 42, with Oyarzabal, Soler and Marín on 40. Oyarzabal scored 18, including 15 in La Liga, while Óskarsson reached 10 after scoring against Espanyol. Guedes had 8 and also 8 assists, two more than Sergio. Kubo finished on 2, level with Jon Martín and Goti.
