Renato Augusto’s emotional farewell to Corinthians, admits “pain”

Last week, Renato Augusto announced his retirement as a football player. As an idol at Corinthians, he was honored before the match against Flamengo and spoke about his feelings during his farewell alongside the Fiel Torcida and his time at the club.

“It was all magical, it was so wonderful, even though it didn’t come with a title as sweet as my first stint. (The second stint had) A much stronger bond with the fans, with the club. So this second stint was really an affirmation of affection, of love for the club, which I will keep forever”, the player told Corinthians TV.

Renato Augusto came up through Flamengo’s youth academy, but enjoyed his best seasons at Corinthians. At Parque São Jorge, he won three titles: the 2013 Paulistão, the 2013 Recopa Sudamericana, and the 2015 Brasileirão, in which he was named the best player of the tournament.

“Corinthians was my great love as a club, it was where I reached my peak in my career, I think the team I played for the most was Corinthians. It’s where I lived great moments. So Corinthians, for me, was the love of my life, of my career. The affection that they (the fans) have for me, which is unique, which is magical, seeing on the street the affection they have for me. I think I received even more affection than I gave them, so I just have to thank them. I hope I was able to give back at least 50% of what they do for me, with affection”, the player added.

His last year with Timão was in 2023, when his contract ended and he was not approached to renew. As a result, he was unable to say goodbye in an official match or other event, and was signed by Fluminense – his last club as a professional player.

“There was that pain of not having a farewell here, of leaving in a somewhat strange way, but… And today, being able to come back here, for me it was very emotional. I arrived already emotional, and being able to come with my family, and experience all of this, to receive the affection. It was magical for me, I will cherish it dearly. It really was a special day for me”, emphasized the legendary number 8, in an interview with Central do Timão.
