Renato used Vasco’s 2-1 defeat to Botafogo to explain Marino Hinestroza’s slow start, saying Colombians often need longer to grasp Brazilian football, especially tactically.
According to Globo.com, he added that while he likes Colombian and Ecuadorian players, he typically approves signings only after prior adaptation at Brazilian clubs.
Across the last decade he worked with seven Colombians, three at Grêmio and four at Fluminense, with only Luis Orejuela, Monsalve and Santi Moreno arriving on his watch.
At Grêmio, Orejuela had 31 games and one goal in 2020 before joining São Paulo the next year. Campaz played two matches in 2023 then left on loan to Rosario Central. Monsalve featured 21 times in 2024, scoring three, and alternated between starter and bench.
At Fluminense in 2025, Jhon Arias kept his level and shone at the Club World Cup before moving to Wolverhampton. Kevin Serna enjoyed a career-best return, 13 goals and nine assists in 67 games, and secured a starting role.
Santi Moreno arrived from MLS but never settled, playing 13 times before returning to the United States. Left-back Gabriel Fuentes was back-up to Renê, made 28 appearances with five assists, and agreed a 2026 switch to Fortaleza.
At Vasco, only Andrés Gómez is an undisputed starter so far. Defender Cuesta has lost his place to Alan Saldivia and is yet to feature under Renato. Johan Rojas and Hinestroza have started once each and have sometimes gone unused.
