Arsenal are actively assessing the market for attacking additions and one of the more intriguing possibilities now under discussion is Julian Alvarez. According to talkSPORT, the Gunners are alert to the chance of signing the Argentina international this summer, with early contacts already touching on creative deal structures involving Viktor Gyokeres.
The situation around Alvarez is developing quickly. He has reportedly told Atletico Madrid he wants to leave, with Barcelona described as his preferred destination. Atletico, however, are reluctant to sell to a direct LaLiga rival, especially after already rejecting an £86million offer and directing interested parties towards a £432m release clause. Real Madrid also failed to make progress, with Atletico said to have been angered by a £129m approach earlier in the window.

Against that backdrop, Arsenal have explored whether Gyokeres could be used as a makeweight in negotiations. At this stage, that appears to be no more than an exploratory concept. Atletico hold interest in the Sweden striker, but Arsenal have not yet decided whether they would sanction any sale, and talks over Alvarez remain at an early stage.
What is clear is that Arsenal’s recruitment team are keeping several attacking tracks alive at once. Interest in Morgan Rogers continues, while positive discussions are also ongoing with Club Brugge over Greek winger Christos Tzolis. Those moves are understood to be separate from any attempt to land Alvarez, underlining the club’s desire to add flexibility and variety in the final third after Leandro Trossard’s £17million move to Besiktas was confirmed.
There is little mystery about why Arsenal admire Alvarez. As one well-placed European football voice put it, “Arsenal have held a long-term interest, longer than Barcelona, so to see them back in the picture makes total sense.” That line feels important. This is not a sudden market reaction, it is a long-standing appreciation of a player whose profile suits elite-level demands.
The strongest endorsement came in a series of striking assessments: “Now that is more Alvarez’s territory – he’s someone who can really lead a team.” He was further described in glowing terms, “He has heart and soul; he gives everything in every game. He does so much running… can create on his own, score from within the penalty box, from range, can set up others.” For Arsenal, those qualities would bring a different kind of edge across multiple forward positions.
There is also the practical side. “Arsenal would be a great spot for him,” and, “It would be a terrific spot for him. It would be a plus for Arsenal as well, I don’t think they have a player like him, there aren’t many players in football quite like him either.” If a deal becomes possible, Arsenal are likely to be serious.
From a hopeful Arsenal perspective, this is exactly the sort of report that gets supporters dreaming. Alvarez feels like a player built for big moments, high-pressure matches and the kind of relentless schedule that decides titles and European ties. If he really is available, Arsenal should be doing everything they can to understand the conditions of a deal.
The most exciting part is the fit. Alvarez can lead the line, drop off, press aggressively and attack spaces quickly. He looks like the kind of forward who raises the level of everyone around him. Arsenal already have structure, control and technical quality. Adding a forward with “heart and soul” and the ability to “create on his own” could give the attack a sharper, less predictable edge.
There will be debate about Gyokeres being mentioned in any swap discussion, and rightly so. Supporters will not want Arsenal to weaken one area just to solve another. But if the club genuinely believe Alvarez offers a higher ceiling for the system and for the biggest games, then it is understandable why they would at least explore it.
Barcelona may be his preferred destination today, but preferences can change when opportunities become real. Arsenal can offer Premier League football, a squad competing at the top end, and a platform where Alvarez would matter immediately. From a fan’s point of view, this is one to watch very closely, because if the door opens even slightly, Arsenal should be ready to walk through it.
