Aston Villa are weighing up a move for Crysencio Summerville, with the West Ham winger emerging as a serious option if Morgan Rogers completes his blockbuster switch to Chelsea. According to talkSPORT, Villa are now considering whether to enter a growing race for the £40m-rated Netherlands international.
The timing is significant. Rogers is reportedly closing in on a £117m transfer to Stamford Bridge, a deal set to become a record fee for a British player. With that expected departure likely to alter Villa’s attacking structure, attention has quickly turned towards possible replacements and Summerville appears firmly in the frame.
There is already established competition. Roma have tabled an offer worth around £40m for the 24-year-old, while Manchester United and Tottenham have also been linked. Villa’s interest, therefore, places them in a crowded market for a player whose situation has changed sharply following West Ham’s relegation to the Championship.

Summerville is set to leave the London Stadium after the Hammers dropped into England’s second tier, and that has opened the door to a transfer through a release clause in his contract. For clubs looking for a dynamic winger entering his peak years, that naturally makes him an attractive proposition.
The former Leeds forward managed seven goals in 34 appearances in all competitions during a difficult campaign for West Ham. Even so, he was described as “a bright spark in an otherwise disappointing season”, and there is a feeling across the market that his best football remains ahead of him.
His profile has only strengthened after the World Cup in North America. Summerville contributed two goals and two assists as Holland reached the round of 32 before losing to Morocco on penalties. Those displays appear to have reinforced the belief among interested clubs that he can operate at a higher level and within a more stable attacking unit.
From Villa’s perspective, the appeal is obvious. Summerville offers directness, carries genuine one-v-one threat and can stretch opponents from wide areas. If Rogers leaves, replacing output is important, but so is replacing unpredictability, and Summerville brings exactly that.
This will not be straightforward. Manchester United are understood to have opened talks earlier this month, although any move is said to depend on the future of Marcus Rashford. Tottenham also hold a long-standing interest and had already made an enquiry in January.
Roma, meanwhile, are pushing hard. The Italian club have already shown a willingness to do business around Villa, having taken Donyell Malen on an initial loan in January before completing a permanent £21.3m deal in May. Malen’s 15 goals in 20 games in all competitions only strengthens Roma’s confidence in targeting Premier League-based talent.
That leaves Villa needing to decide whether to move quickly or risk missing out. If Rogers does depart for the reported £117m, there would be money available, though spending power must still be viewed through the lens of squad planning and profit and sustainability rules.
That point was raised directly when the potential fit was discussed earlier this month. Speaking to talkSPORT, Andy Brassell said: “You just wonder if the right players are around him, the right stage on which to compete, he could really get there.” He added: “I wonder if he could be a potential Aston Villa player going into next season.”
Those comments go to the heart of this story. Villa are not simply searching for a like-for-like replacement, they are looking for someone who can be elevated by the environment around him. Brassell also said: “Now of course we know that their hands are tied a little bit with PSR and they can’t go out splashing out infinite amounts to improve their squad.”
That feels especially relevant. Even if the Rogers deal goes through, Villa will want to be precise rather than extravagant. Summerville may sit in the right bracket, both financially and tactically. As Brassell put it: “I tend to see him as more of an inside player than an outside player, which Summerville is even though he can come into those central areas as well. So I wonder if that could be a good get for them.”
There is also a wider endorsement of the player’s trajectory. Brassell concluded: “But there are a number of teams in the Premier League who would really benefit from Summerville, and I think with the right situation around him he’s ready to go and become the player that a lot of people believed he could be when he came into the Premier League with Leeds in first place.”
From an Aston Villa supporter’s perspective, this is the sort of link that immediately grabs the attention. If Morgan Rogers is genuinely on his way for £117m, replacing that quality and energy is no small task, but Summerville feels like a clever name to consider. He is proven in English football, still only 24, and there is a sense that his ceiling has not yet been reached.
The most encouraging part of the report is the fit. Villa need wide players who can attack space, commit defenders and give the side more thrust in transition. Summerville does all of that. He has had to perform in difficult circumstances before, and that can harden a player. Put him into a stronger side with better structure and more support, and there is every chance his numbers rise.
There will be understandable concerns about the £40m valuation, especially with PSR in the background, but if Rogers goes for the kind of fee being discussed, Villa have to be ambitious. This is not about replacing one player pound for pound, it is about ensuring the squad remains dangerous and progressive.
Supporters would probably accept that there are bigger names on the market, but this kind of move often makes more sense. Summerville has hunger, Premier League experience and room to improve. If Villa can move decisively, this has the look of a smart post-Rogers rebuild move.
