Atalanta midfielder Ederson was on the verge of joining Manchester United earlier this summer, but the move collapsed at the 11th hour. According to Gazzetta dello Sport, the Brazilian midfielder is now close to penning a new contract at the New Balance Arena.

The stage looked set for Ederson’s transfer to Old Trafford, with Atalanta and Man Utd agreeing on a €45 million fee. Ederson even underwent medicals while on World Cup duty with Brazil after Carlo Ancelotti handed him an unexpected call-up in the wake of Wesley Franca’s injury.

However, the Red Devils have pulled the plug on the deal. Instead of signing a multi-year contract with the 20-time English champions, Ederson is now heading back to Bergamo, where he’s expected to pen a contract extension. His current deal runs until 2027, with Atalanta keen to ward off any future interest from Europe’s elite clubs.

Our take on Atalanta & Ederson

Atalanta were only reluctantly ready to offload Ederson to Man Utd. Only last summer, La Dea turned down Inter’s repeated advances, earmarking the 27-year-old as a key cog in the club’s long-term project.

Following an injury-hit start to the season, Ederson re-established himself as one of Raffaele Palladino’s standout performers. Indeed, he made 30 appearances in Serie A, adding nine more in the Champions League.

The arrival of Maurizio Sarri should not change the Brazilian’s status at Atalanta. On the contrary, the former Europa League winners are looking to tie him down to fresh terms and avoid another transfer saga in future windows.

While Ederson’s stance remains uncertain, Sarri will hope that the prospect of playing a leading role under the new regime will help persuade him to commit his future to the club.
