Calum McFarlane’s Chelsea Rise Puts EFL Clubs on Alert

Chelsea Coach Draws Growing Attention

SportsBoom’s original reporting has placed Calum McFarlane firmly on the radar, with Blackburn Rovers and Lincoln City among the clubs monitoring the Chelsea interim head coach.

McFarlane, 40, has enhanced his reputation during a difficult second spell in charge at Stamford Bridge, stepping in twice after the club sacked Enzo Maresca & Liam Rosenior. Chelsea’s 1-0 FA Cup final defeat to Manchester City carried obvious pain, yet the performance mattered. Chelsea controlled long passages, looked tactically coherent and showed the sort of structure that catches the eye of recruitment departments.

Pro Licence Could Unlock Next Step

The key detail is qualification. McFarlane currently holds an ‘A’ Licence, which prevents him from managing a Premier League or Championship club for more than three months at a time.

Having earned that qualification through a Scottish FA course at Oriam 12 months ago, he can now apply for the UEFA Pro Licence, Europe’s highest coaching badge. Those close to him reportedly believe this summer is the right moment to complete that step and turn admiration into opportunity.

Blackburn and Lincoln Watch Closely

Blackburn Rovers and Lincoln City are understood to have added McFarlane to their wider lists. That does not mean an approach is imminent, but it does suggest his work has travelled beyond Cobham.

Lincoln’s situation is particularly intriguing, with fears Michael Skubala could be targeted elsewhere after promotion last season. In an EFL market where coaches are replaced quickly and succession planning is constant, McFarlane fits the modern profile, academy grounding, tactical clarity and experience under pressure.

Stamford Bridge Future Still Secure

Chelsea have told McFarlane his academy position remains secure, with Xabi Alonso poised to become Rosenior’s permanent successor. Yet the article makes clear that McFarlane’s appetite for a number one role has grown.

That is the danger for Chelsea. Good coaches rarely stay hidden forever. McFarlane may not be desperate to leave west London, but this spell has shown him what senior management feels like. Once that door opens, it is difficult to close.

Our View – EPL Index Analysis

McFarlane has not walked into an easy situation. Taking over after Maresca’s dismissal, guiding a young squad, then producing a decent FA Cup final performance against Manchester City, even in a 1-0 defeat, deserves recognition.

Nobody should pretend he is ready to become Chelsea’s permanent manager overnight. That would be unfair. But his progress matters. The club have spent heavily on players, analysts and infrastructure. Coaching development should be treated with the same seriousness.

The Pro Licence move feels logical. It gives McFarlane freedom and credibility. For Chelsea, it should also act as a warning. If they believe in him, they need a plan that keeps him engaged, challenged and valued.
