FC Barcelona once again had to come from behind to secure all three points, this time against a stubborn Real Sociedad side in La Liga on Sunday. An early goal from Álvaro Odriozola put the visitors ahead, but strikes from Jules Kounde and Robert Lewandowski eventually completed the turnaround for the Catalans.

Key to the comeback was Hansi Flick’s willingness to make changes at the break. The German coach replaced youngster Dro Fernandez with Dani Olmo at half-time, a switch that immediately gave Barça more control and attacking edge.

Mundo Deportivo noted that this was yet another example of Flick’s growing tendency to intervene decisively during the interval.

In fact, out of the eight official matches Barça have played so far this season, Flick has made at least one half-time substitution in six of them. What stands out is not just the frequency, but also the impact of these changes.

In the opening game against Mallorca, with Barça already leading 2–0, Flick still introduced Olmo for Fermin Lopez to keep the momentum going. Against Levante, chasing a 2–0 deficit, he turned the game on its head by sending on Olmo and Gavi for Marcus Rashford and Marc Casado, with Barça eventually winning 3–2.

He repeated the formula against Valencia, bringing on Raphinha for Roony Bardghji at 1–0. The Brazilian’s introduction injected new energy, and Barça went on to demolish their opponents 6–0, with five goals coming after the break.

There were more adjustments against Getafe, where Rashford replaced Raphinha at half-time in a match already under control, and again versus Real Oviedo, where Frenkie de Jong came on for Casado with Barcelona trailing 1–0. The Dutchman’s presence in midfield helped spark another comeback, with Flick’s men running out 3–1 winners.

Most of these substitutions ultimately helped Barcelona turn things around to get a win, and this ability of Hansi Flick to make effective changes at half time has already helped the Blaugranes get favorable results so far this season.
