Inter stalwart Hakan Calhanoglu remains a concrete transfer target for Fenerbahce, who pursued his signature last summer. According to Turkish news outlet Fotomac, the Istanbul giants have made initial contact with the player’s representatives to discuss a late-summer deal.
Hakan Calhanoglu looked destined to leave Giuseppe Meazza last summer, with Fenerbahce and Galatasaray offering him a route back to his home country. However, Cristian Chivu convinced the skilled playmaker to stay at Inter. It was a masterstroke as he played a prominent role in the club’s 21st Scudetto last term.
Despite dealing with several injury setbacks, Calhanoglu tallied nine goals and four assists in just 22 Serie A games. Still, he has entered the final year of his contract, and Inter may sell him now rather than lose him on a free transfer in less than 12 months.
Despite having less than a year left on his contract, Inter value Calhanoglu at €25 million. Meanwhile, Fenerbahce are unlikely to meet the Nerazzurri’s asking price, especially after splashing out big bucks on Mason Greenwood and Romelu Lukaku.
However, the Turks are close to securing a place in the UEFA Champions League main draw. Ismail Kartal’s men face Lyon in the qualifying playoffs. If they make it through, the prospect of Europe’s elite competition could give Fenerbahce the financial boost needed to step up their pursuit of Calhanoglu.
It would still take a bit of help from Inter to make the move happen.
