Philippe Coutinho’s abrupt departure from Vasco stemmed from a heated row with head coach Fernando Diniz at half-time, according to Canal do Nicola. The incident came during the Campeonato Carioca quarter-final against Volta Redonda.
Diniz withdrew the No 10 at the interval. Coutinho accepted the call, but instead of returning to the bench he showered and changed, a move viewed by staff as a lack of commitment during a pivotal tie.
His absence angered the coach, who demanded the playmaker rejoin the substitutes. The confrontation escalated behind closed doors, and the exchange included an insult that labelled him a spoiled kid.
The following day, Coutinho informed the board of his irrevocable wish to leave, believing there was no longer a workable environment under the current staff. The atmosphere had collapsed.
Figures close to his camp then approached club president Pedrinho at São Januário, urging him to dismiss the coach in order to keep the player. The president refused and backed his manager’s authority, effectively sealing the midfielder’s exit. Vasco continue in the competition, while Coutinho assesses options away from his boyhood club.
