Wharton valuation sets tone for looming Premier League auction

Crystal Palace are preparing for a market moment that now feels unavoidable. According to reporting by AS, the club’s standout midfield prospect is being positioned at a minimum valuation of 70 million euros, alongside what is described as a “galactic salary” to reflect both his potential and the scale of interest developing around him. It is a logical outcome for a player whose rise has been swift, striking and difficult to neatly categorise.

There has been quiet surprise in England that Adam Wharton has yet to become a permanent fixture under Thomas Tuchel at international level, yet domestically his reputation has accelerated far faster than selection debates. Crystal Palace are watching an auction form around a midfielder who, at 21, already looks more like a completed profile than a work in progress.

The benchmark is clear. Any interested club will need to exceed the 65 million euros Palace received for Eberechi Eze and offer contractual terms that reflect Wharton’s standing among the most coveted young midfielders in Europe.

Big Four interest and Madrid awareness

AS report that Wharton is viewed as a potential signing for the Premier League elite. Manchester City, Liverpool, Manchester United and Chelsea are all referenced, with Arsenal discounted following the arrival of Martín Zubimendi and Tottenham ruled out due to Palace’s own competitive position.

There is also awareness beyond England. Real Madrid, a club rarely active in the British market, have been informed of Wharton’s situation. While Madrid are not currently pursuing a deal, they recognise how his profile could function either as an alternative to Tchouameni or as a complementary presence, allowing Güler to operate higher up the pitch alongside Bellingham and Mbappé.

Wharton has been offered to the Spanish club, underlining how far his standing has travelled in a short period.

Hybrid midfielder with elite data profile

Wharton is not described as a pure playmaker in the mould of Vitinha or Pedri. Instead, he is presented as a midfielder who combines ball winning with construction. A pragmatic hybrid, tactically immaculate, whose influence stems from intelligence and structure rather than volume or flair. His maturity, despite his age, has been evident in a sharp progression over the past 18 months.

Statistically, he compares favourably with leading midfielders in his role across the Premier League, including Zubimendi, Moisés Caicedo, Rodrigo and Casemiro. He leads his peer group in defensive duels while committing roughly half the fouls required by others, and ranks among the best for successful progressive passes. His left foot allows him to regain possession and break lines with efficiency, vertically and without embellishment, exactly as he has described his own style.

Frank Lampard has already suggested Wharton should be trusted with responsibility for England, while Declan Rice’s assessment from training was emphatic: “He is top, fantastic”.

Praise from elite voices

Admiration has followed quickly. Pep Guardiola remarked: “He is an excellent midfielder, his impact is incredible”. Rio Ferdinand has compared him to Michael Carrick, while BBC and The Athletic have likened his low heart rate in high pressure moments to Sergio Busquets.

At Palace, Oliver Glasner considers him indispensable, reflected in an 88 percent starting rate, praising his “ability to read situations before the ball arrives”. Wharton himself described his journey as “surreal”, having moved from Blackburn Rovers to the Premier League for 21 million euros before being selected for England’s Euro 2024 squad.

After helping Palace secure the first major trophy in their history, the FA Cup, his self belief was clear: “If I can speed up the game and create an advantage, I see no reason not to do it. I have the conviction that whoever I play against and wherever I play, I can influence the match”. Ian Wright added: “He will always look for you, even if it is a difficult pass. He looks forward and that is what you want from him”.

Wharton now leads the Premier League for completed passes between the lines at 3.77 per 90 minutes. In March 2025, returning from a three month injury absence, he became the youngest player since 2004 to create six chances in a single match.

It is little surprise the Telegraph recently included him among the league’s top 20 players. Valued by Transfermarkt at 60 million euros, with reports of a 70 million euro opening move from Manchester United, Wharton’s market feels less like conjecture and more like preparation.

Our View – EPL Index Analysis

Wharton’s development has been rapid but also transformative. He has not simply improved the team, he has changed how Palace control games. For supporters, that influence is obvious long before valuations and rankings are discussed.

A price point of 70 million euros feels justified rather than inflated. Palace fans would argue that losing Wharton without a fee capable of reshaping the club’s future would undermine years of progress. His importance extends beyond metrics. He dictates tempo, offers security in transition and gives others confidence to play higher and freer.

There is also realism. Palace are stronger and more ambitious than in previous eras, but hierarchy still exists. If elite clubs arrive with the right offer and a contract that matches Wharton’s trajectory, resistance becomes symbolic rather than practical.

Supporters would hope that any sale is delayed, controlled and strategic. Palace have shown they can reinvest wisely, but replacing intelligence and composure in midfield is rarely straightforward. Losing Wharton would hurt. Losing him on Palace’s terms would at least feel coherent.
