Juventus scramble for striker solution as options narrow

Juventus are discovering that January rarely rewards long term thinking. The need is immediate, the margins thin, and the solutions increasingly imperfect. According to Gazzetta dello Sport, the club’s pursuit of a new centre forward has taken another turn, with Youssef En-Nesyri now effectively out of reach and attention drifting, late and reluctantly, towards Everton’s Beto.

The situation was laid bare with unusual bluntness by Giorgio Chiellini, speaking less like a diplomat and more like a defender clearing his lines. “We went to Istanbul to speak with the player, but he expressed doubts about the terms of the deal. Since we can’t buy him,” he said, “for us it’s a done deal. Then we’ll see what happens in the coming days.” It was an admission that Juventus have hit a wall, both with the player’s demands and with Fenerbahçe, who have little incentive to soften their stance.

En-Nesyri talks collapse in Istanbul

Juventus were firm, and so were Fenerbahçe. The Turkish club made it clear they would not move unless the terms exceeded those agreed with Juventus, while the Moroccan forward wanted guarantees the Serie A side were unwilling to provide. Cristiano Giuntoli’s envoy, Ottolini, stayed in Istanbul in search of compromise, but returned to Turin once it became apparent the negotiation was moving in opposite directions.

There are now further complications. Sevilla have shown interest in bringing En-Nesyri back, and Juventus have not matched that renewed enthusiasm. At this stage, Juve’s margin for manoeuvre lies less in the market and more in patience. One scenario involves signing nobody, riding out the coming weeks, and waiting for Dusan Vlahovic to return from injury in mid March.

Beto emerges as late window option

That context explains why Beto has entered the conversation. The former Udinese striker has found himself on the margins at Everton and, according to reports, would be unwilling to stay even if competition arrived. His profile is familiar to Juventus, physical, direct, and already adapted to Serie A demands, which makes him a logical if unglamorous option.

Everton value him at around €20m, a fee that appears affordable on paper but not in practice for Juventus, who would only consider a loan with no obligation to buy. Intermediaries are now working to test availability and terms, hoping that ambition might bridge the financial gap. As Gazzetta dello Sport notes, “Nothing seems so easily achievable at this stage,” unless the player is prepared to jump aboard what is described as “an ambitious train like Juventus’s”.

Window urgency shapes Juventus strategy

This is not so much a strategy as a response to circumstance. Juventus need depth, they need presence, and they need it quickly. Beto represents expediency rather than vision, a solution shaped by deadline rather than design. Whether that is enough to satisfy Luciano Spalletti’s desire for a centre forward remains to be seen, but the clock is doing most of the negotiating now.

Our View – EPL Index Analysis

There is an understanding that Beto has not quite settled as hoped, often reduced to a bench role and rarely given the consistent run needed to find rhythm. At the same time, the idea of letting him leave on a no obligation loan raises familiar concerns about value and leverage.

Everton fans have seen this pattern before. Players arrive with promise, struggle for cohesion in a turbulent side, then are moved on before their worth is properly realised. €20m reflects not only Beto’s ability but the reality of a striker market short on physical forwards. Accepting anything less, especially without guarantees, would feel like another concession forced by circumstance.

There is also a sense of irony. Everton themselves were linked with En-Nesyri, and now Juventus’ failure in that pursuit has redirected attention towards Merseyside. Supporters may wish Beto well if he returns to Serie A, but many would argue Everton should demand clarity and commitment in any deal. Loans without obligation rarely favour clubs already trying to stabilise their future.
