Juventus have reportedly entered the race to sign Crystal Palace center-forward Jean-Philippe Mateta. According to Rudy Galetti via Calciomercato, the Eagles are willing to listen to offers for their standout star.
Even though Milan bailed on him in January, Mateta could still continue his career in Serie A. The Rossoneri had a verbal agreement with the player before pulling the plug on the deal due to the Frenchman’s alleged fitness problem. However, another top Italian club could bring the 29-year-old to the Apennines.
Juventus are on the lookout for a new striker after parting ways with Dusan Vlahovic. Furthermore, the Bianconeri could also offload Jonathan David and Lois Openda, who failed to live up to expectations last season. Should either of the two end up leaving Turin in the coming weeks, Mateta alone may not be enough to shore up the numbers.
Mateta finally earned the recognition he deserved for his impressive stint at Selhurst Park as Didier Deschamps included him in his World Cup squad. Despite being a marginal figure in France’s star-studded team, he demonstrated that he can still make an impact at the highest level.
With less than 12 months left to run on his contract, Crystal Palace could opt for a sale. In fact, they’ve already slapped a €29.5 million price tag on their sought-after striker amid growing interest from Juventus and several other top clubs. Atletico Madrid and Manchester United are also in the mix.
Therefore, Juventus may have to step up their pursuit of the former Mainz star if they’re to beat the competition.
